Oud and leather are the two materials that ask the most of a perfumer and the most of the person wearing them. Oud is resinous and animalic, closer to smoke and old wood than to anything floral. Leather is not a raw material at all but a constructed accord - birch tar, styrax, saffron and dry woods arranged to suggest suede, or a saddle, or a jacket that has been worn for years. Together they produce the longest-wearing fragrances Merve makes.
These are also the least casual. A leather perfume announces a decision. That is the point of it.
The way in. Vibrant Leather keeps bergamot, black pepper and rosemary at the top and lets dry cedarwood do the grounding - suede rather than smoke, and comfortable in an office. Ballade Orientale is quieter still: peach and soft florals with leather only suggested underneath.
L'Empereur builds spiced cinnamon and cardamom over benzoin, leather and a dry woody oud. Intense opens deceptively bright with bergamot and pineapple before the smoky leather heart arrives. Both are evening fragrances that hold a room.
Abyss Oud is the deepest thing in the range - tobacco, cumin and cinnamon settling into oud and vetiver, and the longest-lasting scent Merve produces. Neon Moon turns resinous oud cinematic with a raspberry twist and incense smoke. Le Grand Palais is the most dramatic of all: raspberry and quince opening onto leather, oud and Turkish rose. For oud that carries light rather than absorbs it, Stellar Oud warms grapefruit and bergamot into rose, sandalwood and amber.
Heat amplifies resin. A fragrance that reads as commanding in December can become airless in a Mumbai afternoon, so save the deepest oud for evenings, air conditioning and the cooler months - weddings, receptions, winter dinners. Through the Indian summer, the drier and fresher end carries better: Vibrant Leather and Stellar Oud both stay comfortable at thirty-five degrees.
