What Is Oud Perfume? The Complete Guide to Agarwood Fragrance
Oud is the most valuable raw material in perfumery, and it is produced by a tree getting sick.
That single fact explains almost everything about it: the price, the scarcity, the variation between bottles, and why so much of what is sold as oud is not.
What is oud?
Oud (also written oudh, Arabic عود, meaning “wood”) is the resinous heartwood of the Aquilaria tree, found across Southeast and South Asia including Assam and the Northeast of India.
A healthy Aquilaria is a pale, soft, unremarkable wood with no scent worth mentioning. Oud only exists when something goes wrong.
How oud is actually formed

Only a small fraction of wild Aquilaria trees ever become infected. That is the entire basis of oud’s price.
Why is oud so expensive?
Three reasons compound.
Rarity. Infection is uncommon in the wild, and there is no reliable way to tell from the outside whether a tree contains resin.
Yield. Even an infected tree yields a small quantity of usable resinous wood, and distilling oil from it requires a large volume of that wood.
Time. The best oud comes from decades of slow resin formation. You cannot rush it, and you cannot substitute for it.
Top-grade oud oil has at times traded above the price of gold by weight. Wild Aquilaria is now protected under CITES, and most commercial oud today comes from cultivated plantations with induced infection, which has stabilised supply without closing the gap at the top of the market.
What does oud smell like?
Honestly? It divides people, and any guide that says otherwise is selling something.
Oud is warm, resinous and woody, with a sweetness underneath and a distinctly animalic edge, something faintly leathery, occasionally barnyard-like, that some people find extraordinary and others find difficult on first contact. It is not a clean wood note like cedar. It has a body to it.
Most people need three or four wearings before oud clicks. If your first encounter was uncomfortable, that is normal and not a verdict.

Types of oud by origin
Hindi (Assam, India): the darkest and most animalic. Powerful, polarising, deeply traditional.
Cambodian: sweeter and warmer, with a fruity edge. The most approachable for newcomers.
Malaysian and Bornean: softer, greener, more herbal.
Thai: balanced between sweet and smoky.
Synthetic oud accords: laboratory reconstructions. Cleaner, more consistent, dramatically cheaper, and used in the overwhelming majority of fragrances marketed as oud. Not dishonest in itself, but worth knowing.
How to wear oud
Use less. One or two sprays. Oud amplifies with body heat and continues developing for hours.
Apply to pulse points and let it be. Do not rub. Do not layer it over something else until you know how it behaves alone.
Save it for the right weather. Oud in an Indian summer afternoon is a lot. Evenings, winter and air-conditioned occasions are where it belongs.
