Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette: What the Labels Actually Mean

Eau de Parfum vs Eau de Toilette: What the Labels Actually Mean

Two words on a box decide whether your perfume lasts three hours or ten. Most people in India have never been told what they mean.

Here is the whole thing, in plain language.

What does eau de parfum mean?

Eau de parfum is French for “perfume water”. It describes how much fragrance oil is dissolved in the alcohol base, roughly 15–20%. That is the whole meaning. It is a concentration label, not a quality label.

Eau de toilette means “toilet water”, from the French toilette meaning grooming rather than the bathroom fixture. It sits lower, at roughly 5–15%.

How to pronounce it

Eau de parfum → “oh-duh par-FUM”

Eau de toilette → “oh-duh twah-LET”

The “eau” is a single sound, like the letter O. The final consonants are silent.

The full concentration ladder

Label Short form Fragrance oil Typical wear
Parfum / Extrait None 20–40% 10+ hours
Eau de Parfum EDP 15–20% 6–10 hours
Eau de Toilette EDT 5–15% 3–5 hours

Eau Fraîche / Body mist None 1–3% Under an hour

What actually happens over a day

Same fragrance, three concentrations, one working day. This is the difference you are paying for.

Extrait · 20–40%

9am spray → still clearly present at 7pm

Eau de Parfum · 15–20%

9am spray → fading around 5pm

Eau de Toilette · 5–15%

9am spray → gone by 1pm

9am 12pm 3pm 5pm 7pm

Does higher concentration mean better perfume?

No. This is the most common misunderstanding in the category.

Concentration tells you how long a fragrance lasts and how close to the skin it sits. It tells you nothing about whether the composition is any good. A poorly built extrait is simply a poorly built fragrance that will not go away.

There is also a real case for EDT. Lighter concentrations let bright top notes breathe, which is why many classic citrus and aquatic fragrances are deliberately released as eau de toilette. In peak Indian summer an EDT is sometimes the correct choice, not the compromise.

The rule that actually holds: concentration should match the composition and the climate, not the price tag.

Which should you buy in India?

Situation Buy
Peak summer, humid city, daytime EDT, or a light EDP. Heavy concentration amplifies in heat.
Office, air-conditioned, all day EDP. One application in the morning covers the day.
Evening, dinner, winter EDP or extrait.
Wedding, festival, long occasion Extrait. You will not get a chance to reapply.
Gym, travel, quick freshen-up EDC or body mist. Anything stronger is wasted.

Frequently asked questions

What is eau de parfum?

Eau de parfum, usually shortened to EDP, is a fragrance concentration of roughly 15–20% perfume oil in an alcohol base. It typically lasts 6–10 hours on skin and sits above eau de toilette on the concentration ladder.

What is the difference between eau de toilette and eau de parfum?

Concentration. Eau de toilette contains roughly 5–15% fragrance oil and lasts 3–5 hours. Eau de parfum contains 15–20% and lasts 6–10 hours. EDP also sits closer to the skin and is more base-note driven; EDT is brighter and more top-note driven.

How long does eau de parfum last?

6–10 hours on skin and considerably longer on fabric. Longevity varies with skin type, and drier skin holds fragrance for less time, so applying to moisturised pulse points meaningfully extends wear.

How do you pronounce eau de parfum?

“Oh-duh par-FUM”. The “eau” is one sound, like the letter O, and the final M is soft. Eau de toilette is “oh-duh twah-LET”.

Is eau de parfum better than eau de toilette?

Not inherently. EDP lasts longer, but concentration says nothing about how good the composition is. Many classic citrus and aquatic fragrances are deliberately made as EDT so the bright top notes can breathe. Match the concentration to the climate and occasion.
